The counter is there, the list is not

It looks like an error: the profile header says twelve hundred followers, but tapping it either opens nothing or shows a few people and stops. Most often this is not a glitch but a platform limitation, and it has several causes.

Two cases are worth separating: you cannot see your own followers, or you cannot see the followers of someone else's account. The rules differ.

Why someone else's list does not open

Why you cannot see your own followers

Here the causes are almost always technical:

Order of checks: update the app, sign out and back in, open the profile in a browser. If the list is visible in the browser but not in the app, the issue is the app and its cache, not your account.

The counter does not match the list

A separate story is when the list opens but holds noticeably fewer people than the counter shows. That is expected: the follower number includes accounts already deleted or banned by the platform, while the list does not show them. The discrepancy usually lasts a few days until the number is recalculated.

If the gap is large and permanent, it points to a share of dead profiles in your audience. Such followers hurt growth: they do not react, so the algorithm rates the first response to your posts worse and shows them to fewer real people.

What to do about it

When it is not technical but a question of audience quality

If the counter consistently disagrees with the list and post reach is below five percent of your follower count, the problem is not display but the make-up of your audience. Removing it manually is risky and slow, but you can change the ratio by adding a live audience with filled-in profiles that reacts to posts.

Quality is what matters here, not quantity: topping up with empty profiles widens the gap between counter and list even further. In the Instagram followers category each service card states exactly what the provider claims about the accounts: geo, whether they have posts and an avatar.
