Likes really do disappear, and it is not an app glitch

The counter under a post can drop the day after publishing, and sometimes a week later. Usually there is neither an error nor a glitch behind it: Instagram regularly recounts reactions and removes the ones it considers invalid. The user only sees the result, a smaller number, and concludes that the platform ate their likes.

You can tell the cause from how the counter shrank. If a handful went missing, that is ordinary account life. If half the reactions vanished overnight, the cause is almost always the one described below.

Five reasons the counter goes down

In order, from the most common to the rarest:

When it signals a problem and when it is normal

A loss of a few percent a week counts as normal. It happens to every account without exception and has no effect on growth.

Something else is worth worrying about: a sharp drop right after publishing, when a noticeable share of reactions leaves within hours. That usually means activity arrived unnaturally fast, for example because the post landed in a like-for-like chat where dozens of people reacted within a minute. To the algorithm that is indistinguishable from low-quality inflation, and it rolls such reactions back.

Checking the theory is easy: look at the window in which the likes arrived. A hundred reactions in ten minutes on an account that normally collects twenty a day is exactly the spike the platform cancels.

What to do so that likes stay

You cannot influence other people's unlikes or the bot cleanup, but you can remove what triggers the filter:

Why gradual delivery solves the problem

If you use paid promotion services, the difference between a sound service and a problematic one shows up here. A service with stretched delivery adds reactions gradually, the same way they would arrive from real people who saw the post in their feed. The platform does not distinguish such growth from natural growth and does not cancel it.

So when choosing, look not at the price per thousand but at the stated speed and at whether the service promises restoration. If part of the amount does drop off, a sound service tops it up instead of suggesting you order again. In the Instagram likes catalogue the speed and restoration terms are listed on every service card, and that is the first thing worth checking.
