Name and nickname on Kwai — the difference
A Kwai profile has two different fields and people constantly mix them up. The display name is what viewers see under your videos: it can repeat, contain spaces and emoji. The unique nickname (ID) is your address in the app: it exists in a single copy, people find you by it in search and links point to it. The rules for changing them differ, and that is the main thing to understand before editing.
How to change the display name
The simplest operation, with almost no limits:
- Open the app and go to the profile tab.
- Tap "Edit profile".
- Tap the name field and type the new one.
- Save — the change shows immediately.
Emoji and symbols are allowed in the name, but do not overdo it: an overloaded name reads worse in the feed and is harder to remember.
How to change the unique nickname
The nickname is changed in the same place, in profile settings, but with caveats. The app checks whether the address is free and limits how often you can change it — as a rule, once per certain period. If the field refuses to save, the term has most likely not passed yet. Consider the consequences too: every existing link to your profile with the old nickname stops working, so changing it in the middle of an active push is a poor idea.
What to do if the nickname is taken
Short, obvious nicknames were claimed long ago. If the one you want is unavailable, try adding a dot or an underscore, a short topic-related suffix or a city tag. What to avoid is a random string of digits at the end: such an address looks temporary and is hard to remember. The ideal option is the same nickname you use on other networks, so the audience recognises you everywhere.
How to pick a nickname that works
A good nickname is short, easy to say out loud and hints at the content topic. Test it by ear: if you have to spell it out letter by letter, it will not work when mentioned in a video. It helps when the nickname matches the display name — the profile looks coherent and viewers find you more easily. And do not tie the nickname to a passing trend: the topic will change, the address will stay.
You changed the nickname — reinforce the new look
A name change usually comes with a profile refresh: new avatar, new bio, a consistent video style. The catch is that regular viewers stop recognising you in the feed for a while and reach dips. To keep the updated profile from getting lost, support it with activity — post several videos in a row and give them starting reach. A little views and followers boost delivered gradually helps the new look settle in and brings the account back into impressions.
