Name and nickname are different fields
A Yappy profile has two fields that people constantly mix up. The display name is what viewers see under your videos: it can repeat, contain spaces and emoji. The unique nickname is your address in the app, one of a kind on the platform, used to find you in search and to link to you. The rules for changing them differ, and that is the main thing to understand before editing.
How to change the display name
- Open the app and go to the profile tab.
- Tap profile editing.
- Tap the name field and type the new one.
- Save — the change appears immediately.
Emoji and symbols are allowed, but an overloaded name reads worse in the feed. Short and clear is easier to remember.
How to change the unique nickname
The nickname is edited in the same place, with caveats. The app checks whether the address is free and limits how often you can change it — as a rule, once per certain period. If the field refuses to save, the term has most likely not passed. Consider the consequences too: existing links to your profile with the old nickname stop working, so changing it mid-campaign is a poor idea.
What to do if the nickname is taken
Short and obvious nicknames were claimed long ago. If the one you want is unavailable, add a dot, an underscore, a short topic suffix or a city tag. What to avoid is a random string of digits: such an address looks temporary and is not memorable. The ideal option is a nickname matching the one you use on other networks, so the audience recognises you everywhere.
How to pick a nickname that works
A good nickname is short, easy to say out loud and hints at the content topic. Test it by ear: if you have to spell it letter by letter, it will not work when mentioned in a video. It helps when the nickname echoes the display name — the profile looks coherent. And do not tie it to a passing trend: the topic will change, the address will stay.
