Thousands of followers, dozens of likes

A familiar situation: the profile shows an impressive follower count, while a fresh post collects a few dozen reactions. It looks as if the audience stopped noticing your posts. Partly that is true, and the cause is almost never the post itself.

It helps to calculate engagement right away: divide reactions by followers and multiply by a hundred. For a small account a result around three to six percent counts as normal, for a large one between one and a half and three. If you got less than one percent, the gap is real, and below we look at where it comes from.

The main cause: your followers do not see your posts

The Instagram feed stopped being chronological long ago. The platform does not show a post to every follower at once but starts with a small group, the people who reacted to you more often before. Then it watches how that group behaved: whether they watched to the end, reacted, saved, went to the profile. A good response and the post travels further. They scroll past and the distribution stops.

Hence the key conclusion: likes are collected not by all your followers but by the few percent the post reached. If you have ten thousand followers and the post reached eight hundred people, then fifty reactions is a normal six percent of those who saw it, not half a percent of your followers.

Where a dead audience comes from

The other half of the explanation is who exactly follows you. Over time every account accumulates ballast:

The more such ballast, the worse the platform rates the first response to a post and the fewer people see it afterwards. The result is a loop: dead followers do not react, so live ones never see the post.

How to tell what is actually going on

Open the post statistics and compare two numbers: reach and follower count. Three scenarios follow.

Reach of 5-10% of followers with normal engagement inside that reach means the problem is the make-up of your audience, not the content. Decent reach with few reactions means the post itself: a weak first impression, bad timing, an unsuitable topic. Reach falling from post to post means the account is losing regularity and the algorithm no longer treats it as active.

Check the geography and language of your audience in the profile statistics separately. If most followers come from countries whose language you do not use, that alone explains the gap.

What to do about it

Steps that work, ordered by impact:

When paid promotion helps and when it does not

Buying followers makes this situation worse: the gap between follower count and reactions widens, and trust from both real people and the algorithm falls with it. This is exactly the case where a bigger number means a worse result.

Reactions under a specific post work differently. They give the algorithm that starting signal in the first hours, after which it widens distribution. What matters here is smoothness: the growth should look like a natural response from the feed rather than a spike. Suitable services with stated delivery speed are collected in the Instagram likes category, and if reach is what you need, in the views category.
