SMM is full of abbreviations and anglicisms: ER, reach, CPM, impressions, viral content. It is easy for a beginner to get confused, and without understanding the terms it is hard to read analytics and talk to contractors. We have put together a short dictionary of the key concepts of 2026 — in plain words and with examples.
Audience metrics
Indicators describing how many people see and read you:
- Followers — the number of people subscribed to your account. A base, but not a guarantee of reach.
- Reach — how many unique people saw a post at least once.
- Impressions — how many times in total a post was shown (one person can see it several times).
- Views — how many times a video was started or a story opened.
The key difference: reach counts people, impressions count the displays themselves. Impressions are always equal to or greater than reach.
Engagement metrics
They show how actively the audience reacts to content:
- ER (Engagement Rate) — the share of the audience that reacts (likes, comments, shares) relative to followers or reach. The main indicator of an account's "liveliness".
- Likes, comments, shares, saves — types of reactions; algorithms value saves and shares higher than likes.
- CTR (Click-Through Rate) — what share of those who saw it clicked the link or button.
Advertising terms
Concepts from paid promotion and targeted advertising:
- CPM — cost per 1,000 ad impressions.
- CPC — cost per click.
- CPA — cost per target action (a lead, purchase, sign-up).
- ROI / ROMI — return on investment: how much profit each invested unit brought.
- Targeting — targeted ads tuned to the right audience by interests, geo and behavior.
Content terms
Words used to describe content itself and how it behaves:
- Viral content — a post that spreads on its own through shares and recommendations.
- UGC — user-generated content: posts and reviews created by the audience itself.
- Warm-up — gradually preparing an audience (or a new account) before a launch or sale.
- Content plan — a publishing schedule by topics, formats and dates.
Promotion terms
Ways to grow an audience and reach:
- Boosting (nakrutka) — adding followers, likes and views through a service for a starting push and social proof.
- Seeding — placing posts in other people's communities and channels for a fee.
- Cross-promotion (mutual PR) — exchanging mentions between bloggers of a similar size.
- Mass following / mass liking — mass follows and likes on other accounts to get attention back.
Why understand the terms
Understanding the vocabulary saves money and nerves: you see what you pay a contractor for and read reports without a translator. For example, the difference between reach and impressions changes how you assess an ad, and understanding ER helps tell a live account from one inflated with bots. Each of these terms has a dedicated breakdown of ours — from engagement rate and boosting to seeding and warm-up; this dictionary is the entry point.
SMM terms are not for show but a working language. Those who know it do not overpay for ads and assess promotion results soberly.
